Finding caches in deep snow in the dark and in temperatures well below freezing

by Markus 29. December 2009 13:25

Last night we decided to take the kids and go geocaching some, the fact that it was -6 C and dark outside wouldn't stop us.

The goal for the evening was to log 4 mysteries that we (Maria) had solved earlier in an attempt to reach 100 logged mystery caches before the end of the year.

This turned out to be a bit of a challenge depending on several different things.

1. It had been warm during the day and now it was really cold again. This meant that the snow was really tough to dig through.
2. There was a lot of snow...
3. Darkness
4. Trying to find caches without the attribute "Available in winter"
5. Did I mention that there was a lot of snow?

We had no problems finding the two first caches (GC1MRJE "We also love cars", GCQMMJ "BOMstones"), the third one (GCWDCM "Black day") was another thing, the GPS zeroed in on a location where finding a cache in deep snow would be a bit more challenging than we had hoped so we skipped that one and continued on. The final mystery cache of the day was a night cache and it had the perk of being logged just a day or so ago so we had high hopes of finding it.

The cache in question was GCM231 "Back to the dark ages" and after some creative parking due to large amounts of snow in the suggested parking Moa and I went out into the darkness. After what seemed lite quite a long walk we finally arrived at the location of the actual cache, all we had to do now was finding it, this proved a bit harder than we had thought but after reading some more in the description we had it in our hands. A quick walk  back to the road (no we didn't take the same way back) and into the car again.

Mission almost accomplished... We are now just one log short of 100 found mystery caches, will we be able to find one more before 2010?
